Memorial Day weekend is the gateway to summer – a long weekend of barbecues, family gatherings, hanging out beach side and poolside and enjoying the three day weekend!

Memorial Day is also the time to take out to remember our military and Vets and all of the sacrifices that have been made for the freedom we enjoy every day.  The holiday of Memorial Day was “first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.”

For this Tasty Tuesday, we have some ideas from our favorite Foodie bloggers that will enhance your picnic and gathering spreads.  Time to relax, celebrate our freedom and thank those that defend it!

Food Network has an amazing page just for Memorial Day that includes some special treats like Classic Whoopie Pies, Pimento and Tuna Deviled Eggs, Mini Pork Sliders and more!  These recipes are from our favorite all American Chefs like Paula Dean and Bobby Flay!

Mrs. Bliss from Housewife Bliss starts us off with some great tips for loving our barbecues – so before you fire up the grill for your family picnic, make sure that you follow this wonderful checklist!

Speaking of grills – how about these Bacon and Ranch Cajun Baby Cheeseburgers from Picky Palate?  Talk about incorporating all the delish with pepperjack cheese, tomatoes and bacon for any barbecue and picnic!  And I love the look and feel of those adorable red baskets for serving!

I love this twist from Cookin’ Canuck – Fish Tacos with Creamy Green Chile and Cilantro Sauce Recipe – I just laid in all of the ingredients for this recipe and it is part of my picnic this weekend!  Super YUM!

And to complement all of these wonderful sliders and tacos, how about a Warm Chorizo and Potato Salad from londonbakes on Tasty Kitchen?  I love warm potato salads and even better, no mayo to worry about on a warm day!

For some more salad ideas, check out last week’s Tasty Tuesday – Super Salads post to pick the perfect picnic combo!

For the adults at the picnic, we thought this Watermelon Mint Lime Martini from Savory Sweet Life was simply to die for – made with real watermelon!

Truly, what is a picnic without dessert?  Exactly – it would be no picnic at all!

This Blackberry and Summer Apple Pie looks like the summer celebration we want – recipe compliment of Tasty Kitchen and adapted from Andrea Reusing’s Cooking in the Moment – ohhhhhh yum!

Peanut butter and jelly are mandatory for summer lunches but we love what Mom’s Cooking Club with these Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars – sure to satisfy all your kids – big and little!

Celebrations at Home suggests setting up a Make-Your-Own-Shortcake station – spongey cakes and fresh summer berries and tons of whipped cream – sounds good to US!

We can work that grill for dessert too, as proven by Coconut & Lime and their Peach Upside Down Cake (made on the grill)!

However you choose to celebrate the advent of summer and Memorial Day, 4virtu wishes you a happy and safe holiday weekend!

Next Tasty Tuesday we are discussing the best lunches for the long summer days with the kiddos at home!  Do you have a recipe that you would like to share?  Leave us a comment!
